    Creating Art with Animal Photography

Irene Bowers is a local and international award winning photographer

specializing in computer artistry. While she enjoys many different genres

of photography, she is particularly drawn to translating her background and

skills as a technical illustrator and artist into the photographic realm,

creating composites that are both vivid and visionary. Whether creating

simple portraits or a complex composition, photoshop is th

    e medium upon

which she builds her images into painterly works of art. She loves using

digital media as a vehicle to bridge photography with her imagination.

Irene is a member of the Professional Photographers of America

(PPA), Professional Photographers of California (PPC) and Professional

Photographers of Orange County. She was recognized by PPC as

Photographer of the year for 2017, and was a Gold Medalist in this years

PPA International Photographic Competition, with two images placed in the

Loan Collection. She was recognized as Photographer of the Year for 2017

and 2018 by PPOC, as well as received Best Photographic Computer Artist

and Best Nature Photographer in those categories.

    The Presentation

Thank you again for asking me to speak at your group. Animals are a

small portion of what I do, but I love them SO much! My main objective

during this topic is to show a few images and perhaps go through a

sample edit. Since a great deal of time is spent on each image, I

cannot replicate, exactly, that which I do in photoshop, but I thought we

could work through an image, which would highlight the following:

    1. Masking an image (if needed)

    2. Adding elements.

    3. Creating backgrounds through textures.

    4. Creating backgrounds with brushes.

    5. The importance of photographing areas of nature that you could

composite your animal in. Just because you photographed the

animal at the zoo doesn’t mean you have to “keep it there.”

    6. Demonstrating how I can use existing backgrounds and get

    different results with plugins.

My presentation more stresses the creative freedom of thinking outside

    the box.

Welcome to PPOC's Image Competition Review.

If you are new to Image Competition or want advice about an image you are considering for Image Competition this is the place to be. During the image comp review, we will have at least 2 guest judges to review and offer un-official opinions during image comp.

You may submit up to 6 images for consideration, Cost is 10 per image. We will be hosting these reviews 2 weeks prior to Image Competition, giving you ample time to decide and implement any changes that you wish if any.

This is especially useful for Image Comp beginners who are unfamiliar with how to edit images for image comp or for seasoned competitors who would like an extra set of eyes to make sure that nothing is missed.

Up Close and Beautiful: Macro Photography in a New Light

Is macro photography something you’ve been wanting to explore? Perhaps the difficulties – and being honest, there are some – have been holding you back. This program and hands-on experience will give you the jump-start you need to discover the sheer joy of doing macro the smart way. Here are the highlights:

    • You want to get into macro photography with a modest investment in equipment. We’ll explore ways to achieve high image quality without that $1,000 macro lens. Amazingly, there are optics that were designed for excellent macro imaging that can be picked up for pocket money – if you know what to look for.

    • You want to master the challenges of limited depth-of-field in close-up work. You’ll learn techniques to make the most of short depth-of-field as well as effective ways to get more depth-of-field when you need it.

    • You want to have fun with your new-found skills. Bring your camera, tripod and any macro gear you may already have. But don’t let any lack of equipment hold you back: for Canon and Nikon shooters, there will be lenses and accessories available for you to experiment with. This is definitely a hands-on workshop!

This promises to be an educational and entertaining event. Join us and be amazed!

Don't forget to register for the Hands-On Workshop on Sept. 12th. Space is limited - Frank Peele - Up Close and Amazing: Hands On

    About Frank Peele

Frank has a passion for photography that began before he was a teenager – and it’s stronger today than ever. Following a 30-year career in the U. S. Navy as a photographer and photographic officer, he established a practice in commercial and fine-art photography in Redlands. He became active in the Inland Empire Professional Photographers and Videographers (IEPPV), where he is a Past President and Honorary Life Member, and in Professional Photographers of California where he is a Qualified Competition Judge and Judging Panel Moderator. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in motion picture production and film education from the University of Southern California. He is a PPA Certified Professional Photographer who in 2013 was inducted into the PPC Hall of Fame, and the same year also became the first inductee into the IEPPV Hall of Fame. Frank believes that one of the great creative opportunities in photography is to use macro techniques to get close to subjects of many kinds, revealing beauty that is not always obvious to the unaided eye. He has also taught an immersive five-day class in macro photography at West Coast School at the University of San Diego.
